Abstract: This article discusses the use
and function of illustrations in Peter Conn's "Literature in America:
An Illustrated History" (1989). In several respects Conn's book goes back
to a tradition of textbook histories that flowered during the first two
decades of the twentieth century. At the same time, however, Literature
in America questions certain assumptions governing textbooks. By opposing
and interrelating text and image, Conn displays the ideological capacity
of illustrations. This capacity shows itself in the way illustrations
contribute to the imagination of the American soul.

Abstract (E): Flaubert's opposition to illustrated editions
of his works was notorious, and yet he himself had envisaged the publication of a
fac-simile of the Saint Julien stained-glass window in Rouen cathedral, significantly
placed at the end of his version of the hagiography. This article investigates the
choice and placing of the illustration and compares the visual and written narrative.
Abstract (F): L'opposition flaubertienne aux éditions

Abstract: This investigation of the narrative prospects of
urban pictures in the scenic tradition is devoted to Hans Memling's painting depicting a
sequence of Passion scenes set in a topographic view of Jerusalem. Refuting Goodman's
view that here "is not only no direction but no order of telling at all" attention is
drawn to the telling rhetoric of certain "micro-scenic" core motifs whose mature typiconic
features only emerged with the formation of the scenic tradition's full array of picture
types. It is conjectured that aposcopic vision may well be a source for scenic parallels
between distance and proximity, hence also for narrative parallels between prospector and
sightseer roles implicit in various scenic picture types.

Abstract (E): This article deals with the role played by the graphic and spatial characteristics of the writing process in the invention of a literary fiction. Focusing on the work by Franz Kafka,it demonstrates that the movement of the hand and the bodily position of the author are important dimension of every literary creation.

Abstract (E): The first aim of this article is to deal with the intertextual plays in Martin tom Dieck's "literary" comics. At the same time, it also analyzes how material aspects of the comics, such as the size panel or the number of panels per page, can achieve a narrative function.
Abstract (F): Cet article soulève une double question.

Abstract (E): What does it mean to read an image
through another one, which appears as a kind of small-scale model of it? A
recent work by Eric Lambé, "Ophélie ou les directeurs des ressources
humaines", proposes a combination of different types of such corresponding
images whichshould enable the reader to decipher the book at a formal level.
This article analyzes the challenges of such an internal "visual metadiscourse".
Abstract (F): Parfois des images très complexes

Abstract (E): In this article, the autor critically discusses the way Umberto's Eco theory of "the limits of interpretation" functions as an anti-deconstructionnist "machine de guerre". The author argues that Eco's semiotic vision of deconstruction bears no serious relationship with the main theses deconstructionnism stands for.

Abstract (E): Martin Vaughn-James's "The Cage" is one of the most important graphic novels ever written. In this article, one tries to explain the commercial failure of this work as the result of its separate refusal by the two communities of readers it adresses simultaneously: the literary audience on the one hand, the comics audience on the other hand.

Abstract: Over the last few years, the comics' field has taken decisive steps towards increasing its status within culture at large. Theoretical research on the topic is on the rise and proves especially fruitful in a time when the 'pictorial turn' gains even more momentum with the expansion of new media. Seminal in the further development towards an appreciation of the comic is a self-conscious attitude towards the steps that are undertaken in the development of an aesthetic and narrative theory of the medium. Academic involvement in this project further attests to the increasing autonomy of this cultural subsystem.
