Abstract (E): Although the visual representation of the past in François Bourgeon's "Les Compagnons du crépuscule" reveals a mainstream graphic novel that adheres to a traditional narrative pattern, a closer look reveals that the story, in spite of the mimetic drawing style, offers several patterns of sense and refuses an absolute interpretation. This undoing of fixed "truths" also applies to the construction of gender. Especially the complexity of the female protagonists and the fact that they are conceived within the power relationships of society subverts the paternalist sexual imaginations and its notions of essentialist femininity.

Abstract (F): Si du point de vue narratif "Les compagnons du crépuscule" de François Bourgeon semblent obéir à une économie du récit bien classique, une analyse plus fouillée de l'album montre qu'en dépit d'un style très mimétique et réaliste, l'auteur parvient à mettre en place une histoire qui se prête aux interprétations toutes faites, surtout en ce qui concerne la représentation de la femme. Ce livre apparemment traditionnel apparaît même comme une contribution importante à la mise en question de l'imaginaire phallocratique et d'une vision figée et essentialiste de la femme.

Jacky Fleming: "Falling in Love"

Abstract (E): Fleming is one of the most interesting women cartoonists in Britain today; her cartoons have appeared in the Guardian. "Falling in Love" is a collection of cartoons held together by a storyline, telling the story of a woman who falls in love and loses herself in the process. Fleming's cartoons combine feminist ideas with an acute power of observation. This article provides an analysis of "Falling in Love" and points out some of the influences on Fleming's work.

Abstract (F): Fleming est un des auteurs les plus intéressants de la BD anglaise aujourd'hui. Son oeuvre paraît dans le journal The Guardian. "Falling in love" est un ensemble de courts récits qui tournent autour d'une femme qui, en tombe amoureuse, finit par se perdre elle-même. Dans son travail Fleming combine engagement féministe et observation de la société moderne. Cet article contient une analyse de "Falling in Love", notamment des influences subies par l'auteur.

Young Girls, Cats, and Camcorders

Abstract (E): The illustrations of Japanese instruction manuals for camcorders are different from those produced in Europe. It is interesting to note that most illustrations, no matter whether they show screen shots or demonstrate the correct handling of the camcorder, show young girls. This article provides an analysis of some examples from a variety of Japanese camcorder producers.

Abstract (F): Les illustrations des modes d'emploi des vidéocaméras vendues au Japon sont différentes de celles vendues en Europe. Or, ces manuels ne montrent pas seulement comment il faut utiliser les caméras, elles contiennent aussi des images de jeunes qu'il est intéressant d'analyser en elles-mêmes.

Vers le milieu du 20e siècle, ces stéréotypes changent peu à peu, et on observe entre autres une tendance à plus de réalisme et à une réduction des différences entre hommes et femmes. Cet article propose un parçu de ces transformations.

Abstract (E): This article takes the fact that we normally see works of art in reproduction as a starting point. If we see two slides juxtaposed in a lecture on art, our mind combines them. How does this combination influence the way we see these pictures? The visual association of motifs and their metaphorical meanings within specific contexts is analysed here, focusing on certain recurring 'motifs' of bodily postures and stressing the fact that bodily postures are always gendered.

Abstract (F): Le point de départ de cet article est que nous voyons l'art à travers les reproductions qui en sont faites. Cette situation influe sur notre regard et notre interprétation, parce que ces reproductions ne sont jamais isolées. Cet article se propose d'analyser les manières dont le sens naît du contact de ces images dont le contexte est tout sauf indifférent. Il s'intéresse plus particulièrement au fait que ces rapports d'images tendent à faire nâitre des sens métaphoriques, d'une part, et que les images en question sont toujours marquées par un imaginaire sexué, d'autre part.

Abstract (E): In "La Cage", Martin Vaughn-James has succeeded in bringing the relation between word and image to a higher level, where distance is closeness, where then becomes now, where nowhere is everywhere and where every attempt to escape is at the same time a request for a firmer hold on the bars. This labyrinth renders reference futile, circularity necessary and a back door a one-way entrance. The only remaining certainty for the caged reader is that nothing is what it seems to be !

Abstract (F): Avec "La Cage", Martin Vaughn-James a complètement redéfini les rapports entre texte et image en bande dessinée: le proche et le lointain, le présent et le passé ou le futur, le contraint et le libéré y deviennent interchangeables.Ce livre-labyrinthe met la référence hors jeu, multiplie la circularité et finit par faire coïncider le début et la fin. Le seul point commun à tous ces mécanismes est que toute apparence y est forcément trompeuse.

Anlyzing Ricard Castells's "Huracan", this article argues that a good adaptation should rely upon graphical rather than narrative strategies.

Abstract (E): At first sight Valery Larbaud's poem "La rue Soufflot" does not seem to have a direct relationship with the field of visual poetry. However, the use of some insights borrowed from Anne-Marie Christin's "screen theory" and an in-depth analysis of the poem's editorial context and history make a visual reading of the text plausible and fruitful.

Abstract (F): A première vue, le poème de Valery Larbaud, "La rue Soufflot", ne semble guère avoir de lien direct avec le champ de la poésie visuelle. Toutefois, la prise en compte de certaines vues théoriques développées par Anne-Marie Christin dans sa "théorie de l'écran", puis l'analyse détaillée du contexte éditorial de ce texte rendent sa lecture visuelle non seulement parfaitement acceptable mais aussi et surtout très stimulante.
